Do candidates hate AI interviews?

The short answer

Some do, loudly. An August 2025 Reddit thread rejecting AI-only interviews drew more than 17,000 upvotes, and Fortune has profiled job seekers who refuse the calls outright. The complaints cluster around screens that replace human judgment, bots that glitch, and interviews that feed a black hole. Reception changes when the screen guarantees an interview the candidate would otherwise never get, opting out carries no penalty, and a person makes every decision. Talent Pronto is built on those three commitments.

What candidates object to

The backlash is real and documented. In August 2025, a thread on r/Futurology sharing a Fortune report on AI interviewers drew more than 17,000 upvotes from people vowing to refuse them. In the Fortune piece itself, job seekers called the format an "added indignity" and a red flag for company culture, and some said they would rather stay unemployed than talk to another bot.

The technology has given critics material. 404 Media documented an AI interviewer at a Stretch Lab franchise repeating the phrase "vertical bar Pilates" 14 times in 25 seconds while the candidate stared at the screen. NBC News found major brands adopting AI recruiters despite the viral failures. And the Greenhouse 2026 Candidate AI Interview Report found that 38 percent of U.S. candidates have withdrawn from a hiring process because it included an AI interview, with undisclosed AI use and one-way video screens as the top triggers.

The comparison candidates face

The honest baseline for an AI screen is the status quo, and the status quo treats most applicants badly. Fortune reported in March 2026 that 53 percent of job seekers were ghosted by an employer in the past year, a three-year peak. Ashby's analysis of 109 million applications shows applications per hire tripled since 2021, to more than 300 per role. At that volume, most applicants get silence. Harvard Business School's Hidden Workers research found that 88 percent of employers acknowledge their own screening software vets out qualified candidates.

So the real choice for most applicants is between an interview with an AI and no interview at all. That reframes the question: the problem is less the AI than what the AI replaces, and whether a human ever enters the picture.

What changes the experience

Three commitments separate a screen candidates accept from one they resent, and Talent Pronto is built on all three:

The reception reflects it: candidates rate their Talent Pronto interview an average of 4.7 out of 5. More on how the interview works is on the How Anna Works page.

Common follow-up questions

Are candidates rejecting all AI in hiring?

No. In the same Greenhouse survey, only 19 percent of U.S. candidates wanted less AI in hiring. What they asked for was disclosure up front, a human reviewing decisions, and the option to request a person. The objection targets opaque, AI-only processes rather than the technology itself.

Is a text interview received differently than a video bot?

The loudest complaints target avatar and one-way video formats: the uncanny faces, the glitch videos, the feeling of performing for a camera. A text conversation removes the camera and the theater. The candidate types on their own schedule, from any device, and can ask questions back.

Do candidates ever hear back after a Talent Pronto interview?

Every completed interview lands in the employer's dashboard with a score, reasoning, and transcript, and the interview itself is guaranteed rather than conditional on a resume filter. Whether and how the employer communicates outcomes remains their decision, but no candidate disappears from view.
